In an emergency, every second is of the utmost importance and it can ultimately be about life or death. Understanding how to move in a building in such a situation saves time and increases the chances of a positive outcome. Understanding is provided through architecture, signage and lighting. It is therefore a central safety aspect when evacuating buildings that emergency lighting and signage are in the right place; the brightness is right; that sight lines work and that smoke filling does not obscure important aids.
There are currently two main situations when designing signage and lighting: New construction and renovation / after-installation. In the first case, work is mainly done with drawings but in the second case it is also common to plan in place.

To create an efficient design that results in a qualitative solution, a chain tool is needed from first approach to delivery and support and use. By creating a fully digitized value chain where geometric information coexists with several variables, such as time aspects and costs, all parties involved have access to “a digital twin environment” for status overview and further queries.
In this project we created a prototype that uses so-called “expanded reality” (XR) to primarily improve efficiency, safety and quality during evacuation planning and simulation.

Features

  • AR prototype app (unity) for placing signs and lights for planning of emergence systems and escape routes
  • VR prototype app (unreal) for simulating an emergency situation
  • Identification and reasearch of digital workflow between organisation for more efficient collaboration and systems delivery.
  • Extensive evaluation of reality capturing methods for augmenting precision in AR

Roles:

  • Concept in collaboration with Bergdahls AB
  • Financial support from Visual Sweden
  • Code and design by Augminded
